Te Toi o Matariki (the Māori Graduate Excellence Programme) is designed to support and encourage Māori excellence at the graduate and postgraduate level of studies.
The programme supports Maori students by:
- encouraging entry into graduate and post-graduate studies;
- providing initiatives that strengthen research capability;
- providing positive networking opportunities and forums for discussion and dialogue.
The five initiatives that support the programme are:
1. Te Toi o Matariki Workshop Series
The Pro Vice-Chancellor Māori office coordinates a range of workshops aimed at supporting graduate study and research. Dates and times are emailed out to all current Graduate students.
2. Te Toi o Matariki Graduate Conference
The conference provides opportunities for Māori graduate students to promote their research and to gain experience presenting in a supportive and encouraging academic forum.

3. Te Toi o Matariki Writing Retreats
The Te Toi o Matariki writing retreat provides quality conditions for Māori Graduate and Postgraduate students to complete a substantial piece of scholarly writing.
4. Faculty-based support initiatives
Each Faculty / School provides support for Māori Graduate and Postgraduate students. For more information regarding these please contact your relevant Māori mentoring unit. The details of each mentoring unit are available on the menu to the left.
5. Te Pūtea Tautoko
The purpose of Te Pūtea Tautoko is to enhance academic success for Māori students who have proven academic potential but are experiencing financial constraints or other special circumstances. The value of the Award will be up to $3,000.
