The Pro- Vice Chancellor Māori office is coordinating the “Te Toi o Matariki – Māori Graduate Excellence Programme”, a programme to support Māori students enrolled in graduate studies at the University of Waikato.

There are four initiatives within the Te Toi o Matariki programme:

Each School of Study in the University will provide support initiatives targeted at Māori Postgraduate students. For more information regarding these please contact your relevant Māori mentoring unit.  The details of each mentoring unit are available on the menu to the left.

Initiative 2 -  Te Toi o Matariki Workshop Series

The Pro Vice-Chancellor Māori office will coordinate a selection of workshops aimed at supporting your research and graduate study. Click here to access the schedule of workshops for 2011.

Initiative 3 - Te Toi o Matariki Graduate Conference
17-18 October 2011, WEL Academy of Performing Arts

The Pro Vice-Chancellor Māori Office will host the 5th annual Te Toi o Matariki Conference which will again be targeted to Māori Postgraduate students and prospective students of the University of Waikato.

If you would like more information please feel free to contact the Event Manager Krista Henare or Event Administrator Victoria Ihaka.

Initiative 4 - The Māori Excellence Postgraduate Awards

The purpose of the Māori Excellence Postgraduate Awards is to encourage and support high-performing Māori students to progress to postgraduate study. ‘Postgraduate’ in this context refers to qualifications comprising 500 level papers and MPhil and doctoral programmes.

  1. In order to be eligible for a Māori Excellence Postgraduate Award, applicants must be of Māori ethnicity, have domestic student status, and have the intention of initiating full-time postgraduate study in the following semester or academic year.
  2. While recipients apply for the Award in the current year, the Awards are for tenure during the subsequent year of study at postgraduate level.
  3. The number of awards in any year will be determined by the Selection Panel, depending on the standard of applications.
  4. The value of the Award will be up to $5,000,
  5. The Awards may not be used for the payment of enrolment fees at the University of Waikato. Rather, they are intended to support the recipients in meeting the costs associated with their study e.g. study materials, living costs and conference and workshop attendance.
  6. The Selection Panel for the Awards comprises the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Maori) as chair, the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning), the Chairperson of the Scholarships Committee and the University’s Senior Advisor for Māori Equity.
  7. While recipients will be accepted by the Selection Panel primarily on the basis of academic merit, consideration will also be given to personal character, as well as cultural and community involvement, both on- and off-campus (especially that with a Maori focus).
  8. Preference may be given to applicants from areas of study where Maori students are underrepresented.
  9. Applications must be submitted on the prescribed application form, which is available from the University’s Scholarships Office.
  10. The offer of an Award will be conditional on full-time enrolment at postgraduate level for a full academic year.
  11. Successful applicants who have received, or are receiving, funding from other University of Waikato scholarships may be limited to an overall total of funding from any/all such scholarships.  Any such decisions will be made on a case by case basis.
  12. Awards will be paid to recipients in two equal lump sums in the year of tenure.
  13. If the Selection Panel is not satisfied that the holder is following the appropriate academic programme of study and making satisfactory progress, the Scholarships Committee may terminate the Award at any time and recoup any funds already disbursed.

Please check out the Scholarships Office website for other various scholarships and awards that are available: http://www.waikato.ac.nz/research/scholarships/scholarships_and_prizes.shtml

To be kept up to date via email regarding the various Te Toi o Matariki initiatives and to rsvp for any of the central workshops, please email your name and programme of study to Krista Henare.

On behalf of the Pro-Vice Chancellor Māori Office, we wish you the best in your graduate studies.
