Facilitating an Effective First-year Experience

Develop Me!
It is  a set of web resources called ‘Develop Me!’  http://www.brad.ac.uk/developme/ and is designed specifically around the first year experience.  There are opportunities for pre-enrolled and enrolled students to discover things about their course, their faculty, their university and the city as well as making contacts with each other.   It also leads on to identifying your skills and areas for development, accessing support for that and then reviewing progress.  It uses a variety of channels – the university’s website, Twitter, Facebook and Ning.  Develop Me! Is a response to the prior work done in the UK identifying reasons for attrition.  As part of this work, the leader of this project has just been made a UK national teaching fellow http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/contacts/detail/ntfs/2010/Currant_Becka_2010 .
