Conference Themes
‘Positioning Geography’ was designed to reflect the many ways in which education is inherent in almost any form of geography. We hoped to sponsor a dialogue across the diverse branches of geography, as we come together to learn from one another. There was a strong focus on the needs of secondary school teachers as well as other spaces and places in which geography is experienced, as indicated by the themes below:
Feminist Geographies
Proposals for this theme could touch on areas of contemporary social geography including, but not limited to, the intersections between gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, age, disability, health, culture, and place.
Geography and Technology
This theme will include discussion of technologies such as GIS, cartography, and teaching tools, focusing on the range of applications and new developments in technological approaches. Presenters in this stream are invited to acknowledge the possibilities and opportunities such techniques provide for education.
Geographies of Place
‘Place’ is the key focus of geography, particularly in when dealing with issues like sustainability, climate change and tourism. This theme is designed to facilitate discussion between these fields.
Māori and Indigenous Geographies
This theme will incorporate aspects of Māori and indigenous geographies including, but not limited to, the importance of traditional knowledge, historical injustices, Kaupapa Māori methodological approaches, and contemporary practices.
New Cultural Geographies
Cultural geographies have extended into new and exciting realms. Papers in this theme could cover anything from new animal geographies, to the geographies of media, music and sound. We look forward to seeing your abstracts!
Planning and Public Education
Environmental and Public Policy Planning are common careers pursued by geography graduates. Planners play an important role in our experiences of place and contribute to the development of a public psyche. We welcome proposals that touch on any aspect of planning, policy implementation and formulation, or public education.
Teaching Geography
Matters of importance to secondary teachers should be attributed to the Teaching Geography theme. This includes (but is not limited to) approaches to the curriculum, classroom pedagogy, and fieldwork.
Papers and Presentations
Two types of presentation were given at the conference: paper presentations and workshops.
Paper presentation
Paper presentations are generally made in tiered lecture rooms with audio-visual and internet access. The presentation cannot last longer than 20 minutes, and speakers will be encouraged to leave the last 5 minutes for discussion.
Workshop
A workshop occupies up to 80 minutes, has a designated director and a goal set at the outset. Workshops are carried out in flat rooms with audio-visual and internet access and engage up to 20 participants. Supporting materials are provided. |
