Research Interests:
Before immigrating to New Zealand in 1998, I worked in the secondary teaching sector in South Africa for 11 years. I joined the University of Waikato in 1999, initially as an English teacher with the Language Institute, and then at the Centre for Foundation Studies.
In 2004 I moved to this department, where I am now responsible for two undergraduate papers, ESLA102, Academic Oral Presentations and ESLA202, Oral Discourse. I also assist on two graduate papers, APPL722 and APPL723. I have also taught on two other graduate papers, namely, APPL711 and APPL724.
My particular areas of interest are in teaching development and materials design. I recently completed a small study on the writing and reading output of learners on a university bridging programme, after they had been taught a series of lessons where a discourse-based approach was used for the material design and for the lesson delivery.
