Research Interests:

Alan Simpson has an MA from Victoria University of Wellington, and a PhD in International Relations from University College, London. He teaches in three areas: international relations with particular interest in the development and direction of the field of study; comparative politics and New Zealand government and politics. He has conducted political and other surveys, and has worked on a range of political issues. He has edited Referendums: Constitutional and Political Perspectives (Victoria University of Wellington, 1992), and The Constitutional Implications of MMP (Dunmore Press, 1998), and has published a range of book chapters and journal articles.

Dr Simpson was Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences from 1999 until 2003 when he became Acting Dean of the Faculty until 2004.

Dr Simpson teaches POLS211 Political Systems Around the World, POLS328 New Zealand Government and Politics, and POLS506 International Relations. He has supervised numerous research papers and theses, including many PhDs.
