Undergraduate Study
Economics is available as a major or supporting subject for the BSocSc degree, or as a second major or supporting subject for the BA degree.
Regulations for a Major
To complete a major in Economics within Arts and Social Sciences, you must pass 150 points from those listed for the subject, with at least 120 points above 100 level and at least 60 points above 200 level. These must include the compulsory papers listed.
Compulsory papers:
ECON100 Business Economics and the New Zealand Economy
or
ECON202 Microeconomics and Business Economics
and
ECON200 Macroeconomics and the Global Economy
Students are encouraged to take STAT160 as it is a prerequisite for ECON204 which is highly recommended for an Economics major.
Regulations for a Supporting Subject
A supporting subject in Economics comprises 70 points, of which at least 40 points must be above 100 level.
Graduate Study
Economics is available for the following Graduate qualifications within Arts and Social Sciences:
Bachelor of Social Sciences Honours (BSocSc(Hons))
Master of Social Sciences (MSocSc)
Admission Requirements
Students enrolling in 500 level Economics papers should normally have a minimum of a B average in their undergraduate Economics papers, with no less than that in 300 and 400 level Economics papers.
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences students commencing an Honours or Masters degree or a Postgraduate Diploma in Economics must have included in their undergraduate degree at least one paper from each of the following three groups of papers:
Microeconomics Group: ECON202, ECON313, ECON314, ECON318, ECON413, ECON414
Macroeconomics Group: ECON200, ECON201, ECON301, ECON 401
Econometrics Group: ECON204, ECON304, ECON308, ECON404, ECON408
Students who have completed their undergraduate programme at another university will need to have completed equivalent papers.
Programme Requirements
Students completing an Honours programme or degree must include at least one of ECON541, ECON542 or ECON543, or the full paper counterpart of these half papers (ie; ECON501, ECON502 or ECON504).
Prior to, or during, a Master's degree, at least two of ECON541, ECON542 or ECON543, or the full paper counterpart of these half papers (ie; ECON501, ECON502 or ECON504) must be successfully completed.
