Graduate Specialisation

A formally recognised specialisation is available in GIS for the BSocSc(Hons) in Geography, PGCert(Geog), and PGDip(Geog or Demography). This specialisation will be written on your academic transcript and will be an advantage for people interested in a GIS related profession. GIS is used in a wide range of applications and as a result GIS specialists are employed by most government departments, many private industries and consultants, and local and regional councils.

To fulfil the requirements of the GIS specialisation, students must complete the requirements of the Postgraduate Diploma, Postgraduate Certificate or the BSocSc(Hons) as well as fulfil the requirements of the GIS specialisation.

The requirements for the GIS Specialisation are:
At least 30 points from
GEOG538 Automated Spatial Analysis using GIS (15 points)
GEOG548 Advanced GIS Modelling (15 points)
GEOG568 Applications of GIS (15 points)
and 30 points from
GEOG518 Advanced Cartographic Theory and Practice (30 points)
     GEOG590 or POPS590 Directed Study (30 points)
     GEOG591 Dissertation (30 points)

The 590 Directed Study or 591 Dissertation must comprise a research topic involving a substantial component of GIS and must be developed in consultation with the programme convenor for the subject and the GIS specialisation coordinators (Lars Brabyn or Lex Chalmers). The POPS590 option is for students studying for a PGDip(Dem).

Prerequisite:
Preferably students interested in specialising in GIS at the graduate will have studied GIS at the undergraduate level. At the University of Waikato this will include the paper GEOG328 (Geographical Information Systems). For graduate students that are new to GIS, it is still possible to study for a GIS specialisation by also completing GEOG558 (Applied GIS for Research and Planning).

Graduate GIS Papers
