Population, Urban and Rural Geography
Undergraduate
Papers | Graduate Papers
The Programmes of Geography, Tourism and Environmental Planning have had a strong
interest in Population and Urban Geography from its earliest days and has
played a major role in developing the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
as New Zealand's leading centre for teaching and research in international
migration and population studies. In 1979 the University established a Population
Studies Centre in the Faculty and students interested in Population and Urban
Geography may strengthen their degrees in this field by taking some of the
papers co-ordinated by the staff of the Population Studies Centre.
The population and urban papers taught in our Programmes have
always emphasized the interdisciplinary and applied nature of population
and urban studies and have sought to balance important international and
local perspectives. Geography has major strengths in international
migration studies and has been very successful in securing competitive research
funding in this field from the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology
(FRST), Asia 2000, the Health Research Council and the New Zealand Immigration
Service. An international migration research group has two full-time research
fellows and a number of part-time research assistants. There are opportunities
for students to be employed as temporary research assistants from time to
time.
Students interested in Population and Urban Geography can select an undergraduate
pathway of relevant papers for a Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSocSc) degree.
Graduate students may select relevant papers for a BSocSc (Hons) degree and
continue with a thesis in Population or Urban Geography for a Master of Social
Sciences (MSocSc) degree. Further specialization is possible for a Master
of Philosophy (MPhil) degree and for a PhD degree.

Graduate Papers
Degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours (BSocSc (Hons))
There are two major pathways available to students interested in Population
and Urban Geography at the BSocSc (Hons) degree level at the University
of Waikato. The first has an international migration or population focus;
the second has a new Urban Cultural Geography or Feminist Geography focus.
Students are required to pass a total of four papers for an honours degree.
Students interested in Population Geography can choose to study for
either a degree in Geography or Demography or they may take a combination
of papers taught from our Programmes and the Population Studies
Centre (see the BSocSc (Hons) degree regulations in the University of Waikato Calendar).
For details of the second pathway see the Feminist
Geography web pages.
The Population and Urban Geography papers have always been student-centred
papers that have sought to meet the needs of different groups of students
as much as possible. They encourage students to focus on topics that are
of particular interest to them. This flexibility and the wide range of
relevant papers offered by a variety of disciplines in the Faculty
of Arts and Social Sciences enables students interested in migration,
population and urban studies to customise their degrees according to their
interests and career aspirations.
The two Geography papers that may be taken for either a Geography or
a Demography BSocSc (Hons) degree are:
GEOG507 |
International Migration Issues |
GEOG520 |
Human Dimensions of Environmental Change |
Students may study a Population and Urban Geography
topic for the paper: |
GEOG590 |
Directed Study |
Demography papers that may be taken for a Geography or Demography BSocSc(Hons) degree are:
POPS507 (half paper) |
Family Formation and dissolution |
POPS508 (half paper) |
The Demography of Health and Health Planning |
POPS509 (half paper) |
Demographic Methods |
POPS589 (half paper) |
Directed Study |
POPS590 |
Directed Study |
For further information on the Demography papers see the Demography & Population
Studies web pages.
Degree of Master of Social Sciences (MSocSc)
Under the new MSocSc degree regulations that came into force from 1 January
1998 candidates for the MSocSc degree must normally have qualified for
the award of the degree of BSocSc (Hons) of the University of Waikato or
a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent (see
the University of Waikato Calendar). The masters degree programme
comprises either a thesis equivalent to four papers or two papers and a
dissertation which is equivalent to two papers. In Geography, Tourism and Environmental Planning
the programme for masters students is normally to undertake supervised
research for a thesis equivalent to four papers.
