Paper description
This paper focuses on the production and understanding of maps using computer technology. The three main sections to this course are the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing and Cartographic Design. The use of maps and graphics are a powerful means of communicating geographical concepts and presenting research results. Computer based systems have revolutionised the ease by which maps can be created, queried, and analysed. Skills in the use of GIS and computer cartography improve the effectiveness and efficiency of planning and resource analysis. The computer laboratories exercises, which are an important part of this course, are designed so that students have a positive and rewarding experience. The paper will emphasise an understanding of spatial data, aerial photography and real world applications. It will also provide support for the development of skills in GIS at the third year.
Assessment
Internal assessment/examination ratio: 1:0
Coursework will consist of computer laboratory exercises and one project. There will be a final test.
