Paper description
This is one of the two papers that are compulsory for the Resources and Environmental Planning (REP) programme at the graduate level, the other being ENVS521, Environmental Evaluation.
If you are considering a career in planning and this you might need membership in the NZ Planning Institute as a professional planner, you need to take this paper as part of the REP programme.
Objectives
The objectives of this paper are to extend your conceptual and analytical skills in relation to planning so that you can think more critically and creatively about the way society makes decisions about, and seeks to achieve, its environmental objectives.
The learning outcomes we expect that you will experience from this paper are:
- A deeper knowledge of the history of planning and resource management;
- An awareness that planning is NEVER value-free; appreciation of the normative and deeply political nature of planning.
- A greater awareness of your own values and assumptions. As prospective planners you will bring your own values and assumptions to planning and they may be different from the values and assumptions of the people affected by the planning. The course should help you to better understand how your personal values and assumptions might affect your role as a planner.
- Provide you with an intellectual base to think critically and creatively about the future of planning and your own contributions to planning practice
