Paper description
This paper reviews Māori geographical perspectives within the context of colonisation and globalisation. It also provides an opportunity for students to undertake research on a topic of relevance to Māori using appropriate methodologies. Students will be expected to analyse the relationships between Māori communities and government agencies who manage natural resources and participate in Treaty Settlement and Waitangi Tribunal Processes. Discourse associated with the impact upon Māori of other government policies and processes will also be critiqued.
Paper objectives

- to increase students awareness of Māori communities and their relationships with the natural world especially in regard to land and water issues.
- to enhance students knowledge of participation by Māori within Treaty Settlement and Waitangi Tribunal processes.
- to provide opportunities for students to undertake research relevant to Māori communities.
