Tourism has become a major economic activity throughout the world and is of great import to New Zealand’s economy.
Paper description
There has been a growing interest in tourism in academia so that today many of its practices are being theorised. This course will introduce students to some of the theoretical constructs that are being applied to tourism from a critical social science perspective, in particular postmodernism, postcolonialism and feminism, which emphasise sensitivity to sustainable tourism project implementation.
The paper includes a field trip within New Zealand for the duration of the mid-semester break. The class will be able to vote on the exact destination within the first two weeks of the semester. A close study of one of the guidebooks about New Zealand is highly recommended to help you make a choice. A research project based on the field trip is an important part of the required assessments.
Paper objectives
The paper will enable students to:
- develop the ability to theorise about the issues linked to tourism and its growth
- acquire an appreciation of the many pervasive impacts of tourism development
- determine the need to plan ahead for more tourism destinations and increased numbers of visitors.
