Principles of Environmental Planning

Paper description
This is a core paper for Environmental Planning (EP). It provides an introduction for those interested in the further study of environmental planning; and an overview of planning under the Resource Management Act for people whose main focus is another discipline (e.g. environmental science, business management, tourism studies etc.).
By the end of the paper it is expected that you will:
- Know what environmental planning involves;
- Know when and why (i.e. in what circumstances) environmental planning is important;
- Know what is meant by the term “planning system” and be able to describe one;
- Know what is meant by the term “planning process” and be able to describe it:
- Know what the difference is, in planning terms, between local, regional, and central government; know how plans and policies are prepared and brought into force;
- Know what is a resource consent and what are the major steps for a resource consent application;
- Know how planning procedures apply to some of our most special resources, such as the coast and native forests;
- Know about some principles of local planning for sustainability.
Assessment
Internal assessment to examination ratio is 60:40.
Assessment will include a report of a council resource consent hearing, attendance at labs, class tests or assignments, and a final exam. Information on assessment, deadlines for written work, and requirements for a credit in this paper will be provided in the first week of lectures.
Prerequisites
At least 60 points at 100 level including two of GEOG101, GEOG103, ERTH103 or ERTH104.
