History in Practice: Historical Methods and Research

Aim/Objectives
The word history carries two meanings: it refers both to what actually happened in the past, and to the representation of that past in the work of historians. This paper is an introduction to history in the second sense and will explore how historical research is conducted. During the course we will focus upon the three components of historical method: research questions, evidence and representation.
Research is a process best described as a 'dialogue' between historians and their sources. First of all, the historian's research questions and analytical conceptual tools shape the initial terms of his or her inquiry. Next, different kinds of evidence (archival documents, photographs and statistics) require careful contextualisation and interpretation. Finally, the historian's research may be presented in different forms, such as a written narrative or museum exhibition.
