Chinese can be taken as a first major, second major or supporting subject for the BA degree, a second major or supporting subject for the BSocSc degree, or as elective papers toward any qualification at the University of Waikato (assuming any required pre-requisites have been met).
Entry Levels
The standard entry point is CHIN101, which assumes no previous knowledge of the language. If you have some knowledge of Chinese, you may commence at a higher level, subject to the approval of the Co-ordinator of the Chinese section.
Note: Language acquisition papers are for learners of Mandarin Chinese as a foreign or second language. If you are a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese interested in taking Chinese papers, please contact the Department of Humanities (Chinese) to discuss which papers you are eligible to take.
Subject Regulations
To complete a major in Chinese, students must gain at least 120 points above 100 level in the Chinese subject, including at least 60 points above 200 level. These must include the compulsory papers listed below.

CHIN202 Chinese Language 2: Part B
CHIN301 Chinese Language 3: Part A
CHIN302 Chinese Language 3: Part B
Strongly recommended in programme of study:
HUMA101 Old Worlds - New Worlds
To complete a supporting subject in Chinese, student must gain 70 points in the Chinese subject, of which at least 40 points must be above 100 level.
