French - Careers

A degree in French can lead you far beyond the traditional areas of translation, interpreting and teaching. The growing potential of the tourism industry in New Zealand and the country's increasing diversity in the export sector means the graduate in French language skills has the edge over the competition in many areas, in both the private and the public sector. French can also give your career an international boost. Languages are the key to employment in Europe, and you could turn your English OE into a career-enhancing work experience in France, Switzerland or Belgium.

Our graduates take up positions mainly in government service, international companies, tourism and education. Relatively few become specialist translators or interpreters, but most would probably do some translating or interpreting in the course of their employment.

Employment opportunities for French graduates exist in many fields, including:

  • International management
  • Tourism
  • Teaching
  • Translation and interpreting
  • Diplomacy (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade)
