Japanese - Graduate Study

Pursuing graduate studies in Japanese enables students to develop their language and research skills. It offers the opportunity to work with a variety of original source materials and gain a deeper understanding of particular aspects of Japanese culture and society.

Staff research interests include:

  • the history of Oceania-Japan links
  • Japanese socio-linguistics, particularly the connection between human relationships and communications
  • Japanese socio-linguistics, especially the use of lying to deal with undesirable situations
  • ethics in society

BA(Hons) in Japanese

Regulations

To be considered for enrolment in graduate Japanese papers, a student should normally have at least a B average in all their undergraduate Japanese papers or in the best three of their 300 level Japanese papers.


MA in Japanese

Regulations

Students for the MA in Japanese must take either a 120 point thesis, a 90 point thesis and 30 points from approved 500 level papers, or a 60 point dissertation and 60 points from approved 500 level papers.
