Welcome to New Zealand Studies/Akoranga Aotearoa
New Zealand Studies/Akoranga Aotearoa is an interdisciplinary programme of studies which draws together papers about New Zealand history, culture and identity. Three core papers provide common ground for students selecting their programmes of study from a wide range of subject areas: MAOR155 Reading Māori equips students of subjects which involve sources written in Māori, to read such sources with accuracy and understanding. HIST227 Encounters in Aotearoa: Māori and Pākehā explores the cultural and material exchanges which have taken place and their consequences for the Māori world especially. NZST300 Writing Identity examines questions of local identity as they arise in life writings by and about New Zealanders, and gives students the opportunity to complete a substantial biographical profile of a prominent living New Zealander.
