Departmental PhD candidates at the recent ALANZ seminar

The Department of General and Applied Linguistics was very well represented at the annual Regional Seminar of ALANZ (Applied Linguistics Association of New Zealand). Three members of staff and eight postgraduate students participated in the seminar hosted by the University of Auckland on Saturday 13 June. James McLellan and Roger Barnard presented a paper, co-authored with Prof Maria Torres-Guzman of Teachers College Columbia University New York, based on research published earlier this year.

The poster presentations made by four PhD students, one MPhil student and one MA student were highly commended both for the excellent quality of their content and production - and the department would like to thank Max Oulton of the Geography Department for lending his cartographic skills in their preparation.

Three Auckland applied linguists were invited to make presentations based on their work in next semester's series of weekly seminars organised by the Department of General and Applied Linguistics, which will be on the broad theme of issues in pragmatics. The Department has agreed to host the ALANZ Regional Seminar in 2010, and we look forward to welcoming our colleagues here at the same time next year.

The photo below shows  Nguyen Gia Viet discussing the posters with Jinrui Li and Jono Ryan, three of the department's PhD students who presented posters at the ALANZ Regional Seminar.
