Higher Degrees

The award of the degrees of Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Waikato is on the basis of completion of a research-based thesis. There is no programme of courses that can be taken towards either degree. However, students enrolling on PhD projects are fully supported by a team of supervisors, who guide and monitor the research activity throughout the process.

For students who are interested in undertaking a higher degree, it  is important to understand the nature and demands of this type of research-based study. A very high level of personal commitment as well as the ability to work independently and autonomously will be required. Ideally, a potential candidate will have already gained experience in carrying out supervised research and presenting their findings.

There are a number prerequisites required and procedures that must be followed when seeking to enrol for a higher degree. It is suggested that students carry out the following preliminary steps when seeking to enrol for this type of study.

  1. Read the university's regulations for the degrees of Master of Philosophy  http://calendar.waikato.ac.nz/regulations/graduate/mphil.html  or Doctor of Philosophy http://calendar.waikato.ac.nz/regulations/graduate/phd.html
  2. Read the Handbook for Research degrees, noting page 18 which outlines the enrolment procedures.  http://www.waikato.ac.nz/sasd/files/pdf/postgraduate/form_2.pdf
  3. Access the website of this department and read the profiles and research interests of staff members in order to locate a possible supervisor.
  4. Send an introductory email to a staff member who may appear to have expertise in the area of your research interest. Your email should outline your possible research question, topic or area of interest and any relevant background information about your qualifications, previous work or research experience that relates to you proposed topic.

If negotiations are to proceed beyond this point, staff members will advise potential students concerning the next steps to follow in the enrolment process.
