Student Profile

NGUYEN (GIA) VIET
PhD Candidate

N VietCountry: Vietnam
Email: vn12@waikato.ac.nz

Background:
I've been an English language teacher and a teacher trainer for 12 years in a university in Vietnam.  My MA was in TESOL studies from the University of Queensland, Australia, in 2005.

Interest of study:
I'm interested in the methodology of task-based language teaching (TBLT) and how it has been applied and how it has affected the world of second/foreign language teaching. Specifically, my current research project is to explore teacher cognition of TBLT in Vietnam, where TBLT has recently been introduced, most significantly in the form of the new national-wide English textbook series.  One concern that arises is that whether and to what extent teachers understand, believe in, and apply this method in their teaching in accordance to the new curriculum.  A multi-case study will be carried out to investigate this.

I hope I will be able to gain insights of teacher cognition of TBLT in particular and second/foreign language teaching in general in Vietnam. This will contribute considerably to my job as teacher trainer, to deal with teachers’ difficulties in teaching and to raise different issues of language teaching for such a context in pre-service programmes.
