Electroacoustic Music/Sonic Art Stream

Electroacoustic Music/Sonic Art can be incorporated into four programmes of study as part of an undergraduate degree. These are:

BMus Bachelor of Music
BA Bachelor of Arts (including the Screen and Media major)
BCMS Bachelor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences (Graphics and Multimedia major)
BMCT Bachelor of Media and Creative Technologies (Creative Technology)

Students choose to  study Electroacoustic Music/Sonic Art at Waikato as Music's innovative programme develops skills that can be applied across a variety of artistic, new media and commercial fields. With composers on staff who directly use new music technology professionally, students learn from practising creative artists whose own work is performed both in New Zealand and internationally.

The aim of the stream is to develop a solid basis of understanding and technique, at the same time allowing each young composer to find his or her individual creative voice. At second and third year level, students are encouraged to produce work of a publishable standard as a way of enhancing their artistic and imaginative development.  Students are also encouraged to submit work to the various acoustic/electroacoustic concert series held on campus, and to national/international computer music/new media festivals.

The undergraduate papers are:

MUSI140 Music and Computers
An introduction to electroacoustic music; the principles of making music and sound art with new technology, including effects, MIDI and digital audio.

MUSI240 Screen Music Composition
An introduction to music for linear and non-linear screen idioms and its composition through digital sound generation.

MUSI340 Digital Composition
A study of the aesthetics of electroacoustic music and advanced production techniques; extends one's electroacoustic/sound art composition techniques in generative, inter-media, and stand-alone works.

Course Lecturers

The University of Waikato is fortunate to have attracted internationally recognised staff teaching in the electroacoustic music/sonic art stream. The programme is coordinated by Ian Whalley with teaching shared by prominent New Zealand composer Michael Williams.

Digital Studio Facilities

Music has two digital music studios and one digital music composition lab available to music students. The soundproofed rooms are situated in the heart of the Music on campus. Workstations are connected to the Music's Apple XServe providing over 6TB storage space. The network allows for high speed data transfer through a 1000 BaseT Ethernet system. Students have individual accounts on the server allowing access to personalised software configurations across the network.
