Performance Stream


BMus Performance


edward king and maria moThe Performance programme offers a multi-faceted degree in a congenial environment that fosters growth and is committed to the development of individual students. The strength of this course is in both its specialisation and its diversity. Our students specialise in their chosen instrument, but partake in a diverse range of practical, hands-on music making. The teaching emphasis is on artistic and technical development growing in tandem. Orchestras, choirs, music groups, competitions, masterclasses, public lectures and workshops are also an intergral part of the performance degree.

Performance tuition will be offered in voice, piano, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, horn, bassoon, oboe, harpsichord, organ, and classical guitar in 2011/2012.

The core undergraduate performance papers are:

MUSI118/218/318 Performance Techniques 1, 2 and 3
MUSI120/220/320 Performance 1, 2 and 3

Please note the performance stream can only be taken within the BMus degree.

Performance papers open to all students are:

Performance Ensemble 1 and Performance Ensemble 2.

MUSI101 Performance Studies 1 and MUSI201 Performance Studies 2 are performance papers available to students not enrolled in a BMus performance degree who wish to include music performance in their programme of study.

Entry into MUSI101, MUSI201 and Chamber Music is subject to a successful audition.


Soloist Specialisation

The Soloist Performance specialisation is a set of papers comprising of intensive performance teaching and practical elements tailored for exceptionally talented students. The aim of this specialisation is to nurture ability and allow students to develop their full potential towards achieving an international solo performance career. This specialisation is offered via Bachelor of Music degree and is currently available to voice, violin, viola, piano and cello students.

Entry into the specialisation is by audition and students must meet the following criteria:

1. Students must have been a prize winner in a recognized International/NZ Music competition
2. Students must have performed a concerto(s) with recognized professional orchestras and/or recitals of solo or chamber music at a recognized major concert venue
3. Students must undergo an interview process with the course conveners

Please apply in writing to the Music administrator at musi-fass@waikato.ac.nz in the first instance should you wish to be considered for the Soloist specialisation.

Students present work-in-progress every Friday at 'performance hour' in the Gallagher Concert Chamber of the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts, where they recieve feedback from their peers and lecturers. Students are also involved in opera, orchestral and choral concerts as well as the Lunchtime Recital Series held on campus, the Musical Feast Series at the Waikato Museum and various other recitals throughout the Waikato region and beyond.


BMus Performance Entry Information


Please note entry into the BMus Performance is by audition.

  1. All applicants for admission into the level one papers in music performance and applicants new to the University of Waikato are required to attend an audition/interview.
  2. The application form, duly completed and signed must be returned to the Conservatorium of Music Administrator at the address given below (please click on the Contact Us link) before an audition can be scheduled.
  3. Please prepare a short programme of contrasting pieces lasting no more than 15 minutes. The interview will include ear tests, sight reading and a short discussion with the audition/interview panel. Accompaniment is the responsibility of the student.
  4. Successful applicants selected by audition will be eligible to enrol for the BMus degree at the University of Waikato. Piano candidates will automatically be considered for the Lili Kraus Piano Scholarship, singers for the Cathedral Scholarship and full time graduate students for the Kerby Bursary.
