2012 BMus Performance Entry Information

Domestic Applications

1. All applicants for admission into the level one papers in music performance and applicants new to the University of Waikato at any level are required to attend an audition/interview.
2. The application form, duly completed and signed must be returned to the Music Administrator at the address given (please click on the Contact Us link below) before an audition can be scheduled.
3. Please prepare a short programme of contrasting pieces lasting no more than 15 minutes. The interview will include ear tests, sight reading and a short discussion with the audition/interview panel. Accompaniment is the responsibility of the student.
4. Successful applicants selected by audition will be eligible to enrol for performance music study at the University of Waikato at the relevant level of entry.

We encourage student to audition as early as possible.

In addition, if you wish to apply for a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship you will need to audition before October 31st to be considered as a music candidate.

International Applications - Performance Music

Music at the University of Waikato warmly welcomes international students. Our aim is to make your stay and study in New Zealand a rewarding and unforgettable part of your life and growth as musicians.

All international students wishing to study with Music should initiate enrolment via the University of Waikato International webpage. Please note that there are University entrance and English language requirements to meet.

The audition DVD must be sent directly to Music along with an international audition application form. The address is as follows:

Audition requirements are as follows:

Undergraduate

Please follow these guidelines for the DVD recording:

1. The DVD should be in a regular format with worldwide access.
2. Clearly mark the DVD with your name and current date.
3. The DVD must be of good audio and visual quality – your speaking and performance must be clearly audible.
4. Camera work should be straightforward. Have the camera on a tripod so that you and your hands/fingers are clearly visible while playing. Do not do any camera zooms etc, just get a good camera angle and leave it recording.
   

Piano
One work from the Baroque period (e.g. Bach, Handel, Scarlatti) +
One movement from a classical sonata (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven) +
A work of your choice
At least one of the above must be played from memory

String and Wind
Two contrasting pieces and an unaccompanied study

Harpsichord and organ
Two contrasting pieces, one by J.S. Bach and one by another composer

Voice
Two contrasting pieces, one a classical art song or aria

Graduate

Applicants must present three contrasting pieces (or movements) from at least two different musical periods.

The DVD must be recorded within the last year. It may be a recording of your qualifying degree final recital if appropriate.

Applicants should perform by memory when appropriate. (Note that additional repertoire to be sent by a further DVD may be requested by the admission panel)

Soloist Specialisation

The Soloist Performance specialisation is a set of papers comprising of intensive performance teaching and practical elements tailored for exceptionally talented students.

The aim of this specialisation is to nuture ability and allow students to develop their full potential towards achieving an international solo performance career.

This specialisation is offered via Bachelor of Music degree and is currently available to voice, voilin, viola, piano and cello students.

Entry into the specialisation is by audition and students must meet the following criteria:

1. Students must have been a prize winner in a recognized International/NZ Music competition.

2. Students must have performed a concerto(s) with recognized professional orchestras and/or recitals of solo or chamber music at a recognized major concert venue.

3. Students must undergo an interview process with the course conveners

Please note if you don't meet the above criteria, you cannot apply for the Soloist Specialisation. Please apply in writing to the Music administrator at musi-fass@waikato.ac.nz in the first instance should you wish to be considered for the Soloist specialisation.
