Jessica Shaw
Recorder Teacher
Jessica Shaw was the first New Zealand student to graduate with a Master of Music (Hons) degree in recorder performance, from Auckland University , where she studied with David Coomber. A recipient of the NUFFIC scholarship, she spent seven years undertaking postgraduate study in the Netherlands with internationally acclaimed recorder virtuosi Han Tol, Thera de Clerck and Sebastien Marq, graduating with diplomas in solo performance (U.M.), chamber music (A.K.M.) and recorder teaching (D.M.) from the Rotterdam Conservatory and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. During her studies, Jessica performed with a variety of ensembles in eight European countries, including a concert tour of the first modern performance of Lully's opera 'Thesee' directed by William Christie.
Since returning to New Zealand in 1999, Jessica has an active career as a professional recorder player and teacher. She performs regularly as a member of the ensemble 'Kowhai Baroque' and has also performed as a soloist with Extempore, AK Barok, Bach Musica NZ, OKTA, and the Karlheinz Company. Jessica is Artist-Teacher for recorder at Waikato University and at the Auckland University School of Music. She maintains a busy private recorder teaching studio, and conducts five ensembles, in addition to tutoring numerous chamber music groups. Jessica has had a leading role as a performer and tutor at numerous recorder festivals and workshops throughout New Zealand and in Australia. In 2005 she was a guest tutor, performer and adjudicator at the 'Steps in Time' international recorder festival in Armidale, NSW, and she is engaged as a performer, conductor and tutor for this year's Recorder 2006 festival in Wellington. Jessica is also a member of the recently formed ensemble "The New Zealand Chamber Soloists".
