Born and educated in Scotland , Marshall Walker was Professor of English at the University of Waikato from 1981 to 2006. He chaired the Departments of English, Screen and Media Studies, and Theatre Studies and served a term as Dean of the then School of Humanities during which he established Music and Drama as new subjects. His publications include books on American and Scottish literature as well as journal articles on music. An occasional broadcaster for Radio New Zealand and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation he has written and presented programmes on Bartók, Bax, Brahms, Copland, Holst, Mozart, Prokofiev, Sibelius and Suk. Cited 'Best New Zealand-Produced Music Feature' in the 1998 New Zealand Radio Awards, his 'Letter to Sibelius', produced by Tim Dodd , was Radio New Zealand 's nomination for a Prix Italia. The industry also commended the sequel, 'The Fog and the Island : A Letter to Sibelius'. A third 'Letter' is currently in production. Under commission from Radio NZ and the ABC he provided a feature programme to introduce Australian and New Zealand broadcasts in 2005 of the Sydney Sibelius Festival in which all the Sibelius symphonies and a selection of his symphonic poems were performed by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy.
