Paper Profile

PHIL350-10B (HAM)
Recent Analytical Philosophy

20 Points

Aim/Objectives

This paper is designed to expose students to the main themes and figures in the development of analytic philosophy in the twentieth century. It aims at enabling students to appreciate contemporary philosophical issues and reach their own conclusions about them. In recent Anglo-American philosophy the starting-point for tackling philosophical issues has tended to be an analysis of language. The philosophy of language, in turn, leads to an exploration of contemporary problems in philosophy of mind and metaphysics. Philosophers whose work is considered include Davidson, Frege, Kripke, Putnam, Quine, Russell and Wittgenstein. Students will be expected to engage critically with the ideas covered. This paper plays an important part in preparing students to move on to graduate work in the field.
