Paper Profile

RELS209-10A (HAM)
Ancient Mythologies

20 Points

Aim/Objectives

What are the ancient myths that have provided the foundation for so many of the world's major religions, and are they still relevant in contemporary secular society? If so - how? This paper examines the role that mythology has played in the matrix of human societies by exploring selected myths from both Eastern and Western traditions. Students will discover that the mythological stories from a diverse range of cultures all bear common themes, and often illustrate remarkable similarities, in spite of the fact that there may not have been any interaction between these ancient societies. Students also have the opportunity to explore how such ancient myths still have relevance in the contemporary spiritual landscape.
