Philosophy is available as a first or second major, or supporting subject for both the BA and the BSocSc degrees, or as elective/interest papers toward any qualification at the University of Waikato (assuming any required pre-requisites have been met).
Before proceeding to 300 level Philosophy papers, students are normally expected to have passed a minimum of four papers in Philosophy, at least two of which are at 200 level. Students with appropriate professional experience or academic background who do not meet this requirement may be admitted to PHIL305, PHIL316, PHIL317 and PHIL390.
Subject Regulations
To complete a major in Philosophy, students must gain at least 120 points above 100 level in the Philosophy subject, including at least 60 points above 200 level. These must include the compulsory papers listed below.

PHIL350 Recent Analytical Philosophy
Recommended in first year of programme of study (at least 2 of):
PHIL102 Introduction to Logic *
PHIL103 Critical Reasoning *
* note either of these two papers is required to meet the prerequisite
for PHIL350
PHIL106 Social and Moral Philosophy
PHIL150 The Big Questions: An Introduction to Philosophy
To complete a supporting subject in Philosophy, students must gain 70 points in the Philosophy subject, of which at least 40 points must be above 100 level.
Note: Candidates must gain at least 60 points at 100 level in any subject(s) before enrolling in Philosophy papers above 100 level, and at least 90 points at 100 and 200 level before enrolling in Philosophy papers above 200 level.
