Research: Visual Aspects of Water Quality

Associate Professor John A. Perrone

In 1993, I was approached by scientists from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in Hamilton (New Zealand) for advice on methods of studying visual aspects of water quality. This lead to an extended collaboration with Dr David Smith looking at a range of psychophysical procedures for testing people's sensitivity to changes in the visual aspects of water in rivers and lakes. The research results turned out to have important implications for some of New Zealand's water management regulations and can be found in Smith & Perrone (1996). David Smith is now with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, 465 Columbus Avenue, Valhalla, NY 10595, U.S.A.
