Graduate Virtual Common Room
Welcome

Tena koe and welcome to the Graduate Virtual Common Room.

We hope that your time with us will be productive and enjoyable.

Compared to your time as an undergraduate student, you will likely find that graduate study involves working much more closely with academic staff as you become socialised into a community of scholars. You will become something of an apprentice as you learn the ins and outs of research and scholarship. You will need to take more responsibility for shaping your programme of study and research. Focusing on your own projects can be exciting but may also make some graduate students feel a little isolated. We hope that the Virtual Common Room will be one of the ways you can stay connected with your colleagues, both other students and staff. Use it to find resources, to keep up to date with what is happening in the School and to network with other graduate students.

Lewis Bizo, Chairperson
Cate Curtis, Convenor of Graduate Studies

For more information on making the transition to graduate student status we recommend you visit: http://gradschool.about.com/cs/transitions/a/howgraddiff.htm

Graduate Virtual Common Room Orientation

The Graduate Virtual Common Room has been designed to help you locate the resources you are likely to need as a graduate student, to find out what is happening in the School and to network with other graduate students. It is intended as a resource for both current graduate students and those contemplating graduate study in psychology at the University of Waikato. It is your resource and a place where all students can ‘meet’ and obtain information that will hopefully make your Waikato University experience a pleasurable and memorable one. For information about careers in psychology, and recent job information that may be of interest, visit the Careers / Jobs page. If you wish to contact your class representative, or wish to have your representative refer something to the Graduate Studies Committee, you will find that information on the Course Representatives page. Information of a more general nature is available on the General Information page. The Graduate Events Calendar lists those events, both of an academic nature and other events that may be of interest to graduate students. If you are aware of an event that is not listed, and you believe it should be, email the site convenor. This does not replace or replicate the official University Calendar. For information on graduate study at Waikato University, the Graduate Handbook is now available online in downloadable PDF format. The Graduate Student Club provides an opportunity for you to network socially and to inform other graduate students of events, news, and other happenings of a less formal nature. This page is intended for student-to-student communication. If you wish to post anything to this page, email the site convenor. The role of the Graduate Studies Committee is to provide oversight and make policy recommendations regarding the School’s graduate programme. This page provides details of the composition of that committee and its meeting schedule. Information from the Faculty, the School, the Graduate Committee, and other more formal sources, that we believe relevant or of interest to graduate students, is posted on the News / Notices / Messages page. Finally, we appreciate that a doctoral or masters thesis, or an honours dissertation, is a major undertaking. We want to make this experience as stress free as possible. Resources that will help you in the pursuit of your research program are available on the Thesis Resources page.

If you have any suggestions as to how we can improve this site, or wish to add information to it, please email the Site Convenor.
