Overtaking lane design
2000-2004
Transfund funded projects |
Simulator-based study of three different overtaking lane designs. Veridical recreation of six overtaking lanes on State Highway 29 in two directions.
Manipulated signage, delineation, and road geometry.
Addition of diverge continuity lines afforded staying left during overtaking
(served as a built-in instruction, many drivers did not notice the lines)
New design subsequently implemented on NZ roads and results validated with on-road field testing of speed and lane position.
Follow-on study compared six different
overtaking merge designs
Herring bones or early termination of lane lines afforded merging (early termination treatment produced safest headway distances)
