Self-Explaining Roads
2007-2010
FRST/PGSF funded project

The Self-Explaining Roads project represents a fundamental change to the way urban roads are managed and designed.

Picture 1

Working in conjunction with Auckland City, the Glen Innes/Pt England district was identified as the first trial area. The trial area is divided into treatment and control sections.

Researchers and Auckland City staff then analysed traffic and crash patterns, surveyed residents, and analysed the road characteristics in the area.  The analyses helped to identify which streets and street characteristics were prototypical (function typical, speed-appropriate, feature manipulable) and identify atypical and special-case streets.

The next step was to develop a design template around those road features that visually reinforce the appropriate speeds and functions in the area. Visually distinct characteristics for each level in the road hierarchy, promoting the correct uses at each level, but each appropriate to GI/Pt England.
