BA(Hons) and BSocSc(Hons) in Anthropology, PGCert(Anth) and PGDip(Anth)

To be eligible to be considered for enrolment in the BSocSc(Hons) in Anthropology, a student should normally have at least a B average in either the best three of their 300 level Anthropology papers or all their undergraduate Anthropology papers.

To complete a BA(Hons) or BSocSc(Hons) in Anthropology, students must complete 120 points at 500 level, including at least 60 points from papers listed for Anthropology.

Note: The BA(Hons) in Anthropology and amendments to the BSocSc(Hons) in Anthropology are subject to approval by the NZVCC's Committee on University Academic Programmes (CUAP).

MSocSc in Anthropology

Students for the MSocSc in Anthropology must take either a 120 point thesis, a 90 point thesis and 30 points from approved 500 Level papers, or a 60 point dissertation and 60 points from approved 500 Level papers.

Entry to the MSocSc is open to suitably qualified candidates who have completed the core papers for the BSocSc(Hons) in Anthropology.

A Master's thesis is the equivalent of four papers and therefore represents on full-time year of study or more than one year part-time. A dissertation is the equivalent of two papers and therefore represents half the work required for one year of full-time study or all the work for one year of part-time study. A directed study (ANTH590), as outlined in the section on BSocSc(Hons) above, is the equivalent of one paper and can therefore be part of either a full-time or part-time programme of study. These different 'weightings' are reflected in the length of the written text required to be submitted for assessment: about 30,000 words for a thesis, 15,000 words for a dissertation, and 7,500 words for a full-paper directed research project.

Please note that we now have a half-paper option for directed study, ANTH589, which can also be fitted into individual programmes of study.

In the last few years, Anthropology Master's students have successfully completed thesis projects on women and development in Bougainville, the Congolese community in Hamilton and Auckland, Fijian cultural identity in New Zealand, and Maori teenage girls' ideas of the body and bodily boundaries. Other MSocSc Anthropology theses recently completed address cultural revitalisation among a tribal nation in British Columbia , Maori concepts of culture and ownership, and gender and ethnicity in Fiji.

GradCert(Anth) and GradDip(Anth)

A Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma are available to graduates who have not included Anthropology at an advanced level in their first degree.
