Welcome to the Anthropology Programme

Anthropology is usually defined as 'the study of humanity'.

Here at the University of Waikato we are particularly concerned with sociocultural anthropology - that is, the comparative study of the whole range of contemporary human societies and cultures, from tribal and peasant through to industrial and global. The Pacific region, with its diverse peoples and lifeways, both indigenous and settler, is the main focus of our teaching and research.

You can use the links on the left to discover more about the courses offered in the Anthropology Programme, and learn more about Anthropology as a discipline at our University.

Anthropology students are encouraged to join the Association of Social Anthropologists of Aotearoa/New Zealand, which organises an enjoyable and stimulating annual conference. Student subscriptions are cheap, and include the annual set of working papers.
