Population Studies - Undergraduate Study


Qualifications Available

Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSocSc) | Degree Planner (pdf)
Certificate (Cert(SocSc))
Diploma (Dip(SocSc))

Population Studies can be taken as a major, second major or supporting subject for the BSocSc, as a second major or support for the BA degree, or as elective papers toward any qualification at the University of Waikato (assuming any required prerequisites have been met).


Subject Regulations

To complete an interdisciplinary major in Population Studies, students must gain at least 120 points above 100 level in the Population Studies subject, including at least 60 points above 200 level. These must include the compulsory papers listed below.

Compulsory papers:
     POPS201 Introduction to Population Studies
     SSRP202 The Practice of Social Science Research
     and one of:
     ECON202 Microeconomics and Business Economics
     GEOG210 Regional Geography: Pacific Islands Region
     GEOG228 Information Technology and Cartography
     LBST202 Labour Market Structures and Policy
     SOCP206 Social Policy and Social Issues
     SOCY222 Sociology of the Family
     and two of:
     POPS302 Applied Demography
     POPS390 Directed Study
     SOCP303 Analysis of Social Policy Issues OR
     SSRP307 Techniques of Social Science Research: Quantitative Analysis
     and one of:
     ECON313 Economics of Human Resources and Public Policy
     GEOG301 Research in Human Geography
     GEOG328 Geographic Information Systems

Recommended in programme of study:
     ECON100 Business Economics and the New Zealand Economy
     GEOG101 People and Place: Introduction to Social and Cultural
                     Geography
     SOCP102 Introduction to Social Policy

To complete a supporting subject in Population Studies, students must gain at least 70 points in the Population Studies subject, of which at least 40 points must be above 100 level. These must include the compulsory papers listed.

Compulsory papers:
     POPS201 Introduction to Population Studies
     and one of:
     GEOG101 People and Place: Introduction to Social and Cultural
                     Geography
     SOCP102 Introduction to Social Policy
     
SOCY101 Introduction to Sociology

Note: Candidates must gain at least 60 points at 100 level in any subject(s) before enrolling in Population Studies papers above 100 level, and at least 90 points at 100 and 200 level before enrolling in Population Studies papers above 200 level.
