Health Development & Policy - Graduate Study

This graduate programme provides students with a unique opportunity to study in health development and policy and will be especially relevant to students wishing to further develop skills gained from working in health or an associated area. On completion of their study students will have an appreciation for social and critical perspectives in health and will have gained the skills to undertake social research in health, information analysis for health policy and be prepared for further doctoral research work.

The aims of the Health Development and Policy programme are to produce graduates who:

  • have a social science approach to understanding health issues with a particular focus on critical, multi-disciplinary and culturally sensitive perspectives;
  • use social science research methodology in health analysis;
  • understand contemporary policy developments in health at the local, national and international level;
  • demonstrate an ability to marshal a range of social, demographic, epidemiological data to understand health issues;
  • conduct health research using social science methodologies;

There is an emphasis on issues and themes of relevance to the Waikato region.

Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours (BSocSc(Hons))
Master of Social Sciences (MSocSc)
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert(HealthDevPol))
Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip(HealthDevPol))


BSocSc(Hons) in Health Development & Policy, PGCert(HealthDevPol) and PGDip(HealthDevPol)

To be eligible to be considered for enrolment in the BSocSc(Hons) in Health Development and Policy papers, a student should normally have at least a B average in either the best three of their 300 level papers or all their undergraduate major.

Students must include:
     HDVP504 Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Health Development & Policy: Frameworks
                    for Analysis
     HDVP505 Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Health Development & Policy: Systems for
                    Health Delivery
     HDVP506 Methods in Health Policy Analysis
     and either
     SSRP503 The Conduct of Social Science Research: Qualitative Research
     or
     SSRP504 The Conduct of Social Science Research: Survey Research


MSocSc in Health Development & Policy

Entry to the MSocSc in Health Development and Policy is open to suitably qualified students who have completed the core papers for the BSocSc(Hons) in Health Development and Policy. To complete an MSocSc in Health Development and Policy, students must take either a 120 point thesis, a 90 point thesis and 30 points from approved 500 level papers, or a 60 point dissertation and 60 points from approved 500 level papers.
