Social Science Research - Graduate Study


Qualifications Available

Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours (BSocSc(Hons))
Master of Social Sciences (MSocSc)
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert(SocScRes))
Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip(SocScRes))


BSocSc(Hons) in Social Science Research

To be eligible to be considered for enrolment in graduate study in Social Science Research, a student should normally have at least a B average in the best three of their 300 level Social Science Research papers, or all their undergraduate Social Science Research papers. They should also have a significant research methods component (normally at least 40 points) in that degree.

To complete a BSocSc(Hons) in Social Science Research, students must take 120 points at 500 level, including the compulsory papers listed:

Candidates for the BSocSc(Hons) must complete:
     SSRP503 The Conduct of Social Science Research: Qualitative Research
     SSRP504 The Conduct of Social Science Research: Survey Research
     plus one of:
     SSRP589 Directed Study (half paper)
     SSRP590 Directed Study
     plus two of:
     ANTH515 Ethnographic Research
     ECON544 Research Methods in Economics and Finance
     POPS509 Quantitative Analysis in the Social Sciences
     plus at least 15 points from the other papers listed for Social Science Research
     and up to 30 points from the graduate programme of another BSocSc(Hons) subject.


PGDip(SocScRes)

Enrolment for the Postgraduate Diploma must be for a minimum of one year, but may be spread over a longer period on a part-time basis.

To complete a PGDip(SocScRes), students must take:
     SSRP591 Dissertation
     a further 60 points from:
     ANTH515 Ethnographic Research
     POPS509 Demographic Methods
     SSRP503 The Conduct of Social Science Research: Qualitative Research
     SSRP504 The Conduct of Social Science Research: Survey Research
     SSRP505 Issues in Social Science Research
     and up to 30 further points from approved 500 level papers.


MSocSc in Social Science Research

Students for the MSocSc in Social Science Research must take either a 120 point thesis, a 90 point thesis and 30 points from approved 500 Level papers, or a 60 point dissertation and 60 points from approved 500 Level papers.
