Welcome to the Social Science Research Programme
Why Study Social Science Research?
Social science research is the activity of gathering, analysing and interpreting information for a variety of social, economic, educational and political purposes. Courses in the Social Science Research Programme, taken in conjunction with core courses from other subjects, ensure that social researchers have a critical appreciation of contemporary society and social issues based on a sound foundation of social theory and research methodology. The social researcher needs to be familiar with a range of social research methods, each of which has its own strengths and limitations. Different methods are often associated with different styles of research practice. Elements of social research design are also studied - these encompass not only theoretical and methodological but also ethical considerations relating to respect for the rights and welfare of all parties involved in the research.
The ability to conduct sound and responsible social research is an important skill central to any social science qualification. Effective research is required to complete many aspects of undergraduate and graduate degrees. Social science research skills are also essential in a range of employment positions in central and local government, in the private sector, and in community, union and volunteer organisations. An appreciation of what is involved in social research enables citizens to assess critically much of the information and opinion, based on social research, which they encounter daily in their work and in the media.
