Sociology - Careers

The question is often asked: what can one do with a degree in Sociology? Our graduates have a good record of finding employment in a wide variety of occupations, both conventional and innovative. Most move into areas where they can use and apply our critical approach to some area of social policy or social development, such as in government departments, SOEs, local and iwi authorities, and the private sector.

Community Affairs/ church social service agencies,work; counselling; iwi development; museums and galleries; social welfare; sport and recreation.

Consultancy Government (Health, Foreign Affairs, Welfare, Justice); International (UN, international aid, foreign governments); social analysis; social impact assessment; urban/regional planning.

Education & Research Education administration and review; early childhood, primary, secondary, polytechnic, university, informal and continuing education; Waitangi Tribunal investigations.

Government Central government; health administration; Human Rights Commission; local and regional government; Planning Council; politics and pressure groups; social policy analysis; Social Welfare agencies; State Owned Enterprises.

Industry & Commerce Accident Compensation; development and planning; industrial relations; management services; market research and development; personnel management; retail development; Trade Union organisation; travel and tourism.

Information Archives, libraries, newspapers, publishing, radio, telecommunications, television.

Medicine Community health programmes; epidemiology; family planning; medical anthropology; nursing administration.
