Graduate Study

“If you write one story, it may be bad; if you write a hundred, you have the odds in your favor.”
~ Edgar Rice Burroughs

Writing StudiesWriting Studies is not currently available as a major for the BA(Hons) or the MA.

A Graduate Certificate (GradCert (Writ)) and Graduate Diploma (GradDip(Writ)) are available to graduates who have not included Writing Studies at an advanced level in their first degree. ENGL217 Writing and Audience is compulsory for the subject under both qualifications.

Suitably qualified graduates who meet the enrolment criteria may pursue a programme of directed research for a higher degree, provided the topic or field of research can be adequately supervised and resourced.

Students completing a major in Writing Studies may satisfy the requirements for graduate study in English or Screen and Media Studies but in some cases such requirements might have to be met by concurrent enrolment in additional 300 level paper/s in English or Screen and Media Studies.

The University already offers the following writing papers at graduate level:

  • ENGL546 Creative Writing
  • ENGL556 Write/Edit/Text
  • SMST507 Scriptwriting

Writing StudiesA major in Writing Studies with a language/linguistics inflection may lead towards the MA (Applied) in Applied Linguistics with one of the following emphases:

Discourse Analysis
English Language Analysis
Interpreting and Translation
International Languages
Education

Students considering graduate study should discuss their programmes with the relevant programme convenor/s.
