Ko te manu e kai ana i te miro, nōna te ngahere.
Ko te manu e kai ana i te mātauranga, nōna te ao.

The bird that partakes of the miro berry reigns in the forest.
The bird that partakes of the power of knowledge has access to the world.

Nau mai haere mai

This is a space dedicated especially to our graduate and postgraduate students. You form a significant group at the University and contribute a feeling of diversity and life erperience to the campus community. You are also an important part of the research culture of the University. Here at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, we have Māori students embarking on higher qualifications in all sorts of disciplines; Psychology, Geography, Music, Second Language Teaching, Sociology, Politcal Science to name a few. While the subjects within the Faculty may be diverse, we strive to create a sense of whakawhanaungatanga between our graduate and postgraduate students. At graduate level, you begin to enjoy an intellectual independance, but you can also feel a sense of isolation from your fellow students. We are here to help to combat that sense of isolation, as well as assist you on your academic journey.

Below are a list of resources and support services that are available specifically to you as a Māori graduate or postgraduate student at FASS. We really encourage you to engage with the support on offer - we want to make your time here at University a positive and enjoyable experience, and to help you get the absolute most out of it.

She has dedicated office hours in JK.2.02 which can be found here. Maori researchers' edition of TKKA

Te Kura Kete Aronui is a peer-reviewed electronic journal that showcases original work of graduate and postgraduate students. The journal is published online and aims to be dynamic, innovative and interdisciplinary. This year, we have hijacked TTKA and are publishing a Māori researchers' edition of the journal. This is still in the planning stages, but if you are interested in submiting an article, get in touch with Hemaima to discuss further.

Te Toi o Matariki Conference

Held every year, in 2011 the conference will be held in October. This conference provides Waikato University Māori graduate students with a supportive and encouraging academic environment from which to present their current research. The objective of the conference each year is to highlight the diverse and exciting research being embarked upon by our Māori graduates, while also providing networking and whanaungatanga opportunities. A panel of Māori academic staff also review the presentations and outstanding student presenters are awarded commendations. The Faculty has a coordinated presence at the conference, so please contact us if you are interested in either presenting at or attending the conference. For the presenters, we can organise seminars and/or practice sessions so that you can feel comfortable and confident when you showcase your mahi at the conference. Hemaima will update you all as more information becomes available.

Networking Evenings

Te Aka Matua will host two graduate evenings this year. I dinner in May and a Networking Evening in B Semester. We hope to create a network of links between the different subjects that you can tap into throughout your graduate study, and create a sense of whanaungatanga to alleviate some of the isolation some of you may be experiencing.
