Welcome to Te Kāinga, the home page for Māori students in The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.  This website introduces you to some of the kaupapa Māori initiatives occurring around the Faculty.  Most of these include the mahi of the Māori student support network Te Aka Matua and the Takawaenga Māori.

The Faculty offers orientation activities, academic tutoring, mentoring, programme and course advice, study wānanga and other helpful initiatives.  Some departments within the Faculty offer Kaupapa Māori Tutorials, where you are taught alongside other Māori students, by a Māori tutor.

We also hold whakawhanaungatanga activities, or social get-togethers, throughout the year to bring Māori students together, usually with a mean kai on the side. If you happen to come upon one of these activities around the Faculty, kaua e whakamā - don't be shy.  Just come on over and meet our friendly people.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

The Takawaenga Māori can be your first point of contact regarding any queries or issues arising from your study within the Faculty.  Students come in to get course advice, help with degree planning, scholarship application sign offs and academic advice.  The Takawaenga Māori is also responsible for organising hui and wānanga for Māori students within the Faculty, and coordinating the FASS kaiāwhina programme. If there is anything you need anything while you study here, the Takawaenga Māori can help you out.

The Faculty encourages and supports the development of Kaupapa Māori. As such, we welcome and encourage students to include Māori ideas, perspectives and concepts in their work, as appropriate to the assignment topic.

In accordance with the University of Waikato Policy on the use of Te Reo Māori in Assessment, students may also submit assessments in Te Reo Māori, in whole or in part.  Students wishing to do so should refer to the policy and should consult with the convenor of the paper or the Māori Student Support Coordinator.

Te Aka Matua is a rōpū tautoko in FASS.  This rōpū is coordinated by the Takawaenga Māori and includes kaiāwhina Māori from various departments within the Faculty. The aim of Te Aka Matua is to provide comprehensive and coordinated support to Māori students in FASS. We have an office in JK.2.02 that is manned every day. If you have any questions, just drop in and talk to one of the team. We look forward to meeting you throughout the year.
