Colloquium on Research into Doctoral Education

The Doctoral Research and Writing Unit, The University of Waikato is hosting a Colloquium on research and practice in the broad field of doctoral education.

In the past two decades there has been an increasing population of doctoral students globally, including in New Zealand. This new “face” of doctoral study has introduced a variety of challenges. As universities have sought to maintain the quality of the doctoral degree, attention has turned to both macro and micro level strategies for supporting research and writing excellence. At the macro level attention has focused on the processes of supervision, monitoring of progress through central university procedures, and the creation of new structures and forms for disseminating the completed thesis. At the micro level research has examined thesis writing processes within a variety of disciplines and the types of supports required for diverse student groups.

The colloquium will provide an opportunity to discuss new possibilities for research into and support for doctoral scholarship.

Some themes for discussion at the colloquium include:

  • Theoretical framings and institutional structures for doctoral support programmes,
  • Theoretical and practice framings of the doctoral experience and outcomes,
  • Case studies of exemplary programmes and practices,
  • The nature of evidence of impact – how do we know what we know?
