Focused Reading Group
Date / Time: 30 April 2014, 10.30am–12pm / 8 May 2014, 10.30am–12pm
Susan Groundwater-Smith
Susan Groundwater-Smith, University of Sydney
Susan has proposed that we establish a reading group focused on aspects of engaging with children and young people in participatory research. The suggestion is inspired by Cherryholmes, C. (1993). Reading research. Journal of Curriculum Studies, 25(1), 1–32. In this article Cherryholmes argues that we read research through a specific orientation.
It is anticipated that the group will meet twice during each of her visits to Hamilton. For the visit 29 April–9 May the focus will be on the following article (Copy available from Margaret Drummond): Parnell, R., & Patsarika, M. (2014). Playful voices in participatory design. In C. Burke & K. Jones (Eds.), Education, childhood and anarchism (pp. 99–112). London, England: Routledge.
Readers are asked to consider the chapter from the perspective of their favourite social theorist, for example, Deleuze, Bakhtin, Habermas (to name but a few) and to consider how that theorist has informed their reading. The discussion will then focus on comparing and contrasting perspectives and insights gained. The article for the second reading group will be negotiated with participants.
VENUE: 30 April: Alan Hall Room / 8 May: TX5, G.04 (NCLANA building)
