Key learning competencies across place and time

Director: Margaret Carr

Researchers: Sally Peters, Tina Simpson

Project Dates: 2005 - 2007

The aim of this project was to investigate pedagogy designed to develop learning competencies over time in a number of early childhood centres and early years school classrooms that had already begun to explore in this area.

Beginning in 2005, the researchers worked with teachers over a three-year period. Pedagogical practices and learning episodes associated with competencies were investigated using interviews and observations, together with on-going discussions that include researchers’, teachers’ and children’s views.

The project concluded in 2007 with final reflections from teachers and children on their key competencies and pedagogical practice over time and place. The project involved partnerships between university researchers and co-directors Dr Margaret Carr and Dr Sally Peters (University of Waikato), teacher researchers from three schools and three early childhood centres in Rotorua and Christchurch, and associated coordinators.

The Key Learning Competencies Project was a three-year project funded through the Teaching and Learning Research Initiative (TLRI). For more information about the TLRI please go to tlri.org.nz
