Network Leader: Bronwen Cowie

The Science, Maths, Technology and Environmental Education research network is concerned with research into science, mathematics, technology and environmental education across a range of educational contexts. Members of the network share a sociocultural orientation to learning and an interest in the intersection of theory and practice. There are a number of strong research strands within this network including science education; mathematics education; technology education and environmental education.

Research Strands

Science education: This strand draws from and builds on a strong tradition of classroom-based research focused on the nature of interactions, student ideas, assessment for learning and teacher pedagogical content knowledge. Members of the strand share a sociocultural orientation to learning and an interest in the intersection of theory and practice.

Participating staff: Beverley Bell, Cathy Buntting, Bronwen Cowie, Anne Hume, Alister Jones, Kathrin Otrel-Cass, Kathy Saunders, Chris Eames.

Mathematics education: People in this strand have a range of research interests that include: the perspectives of teachers and students towards mathematics/numeracy learning, teacher pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics, assessment for learning, statistical literacy, and the use of ICT in mathematics teaching. Members of the strand share a sociocultural orientation to learning and an interest in the intersection of theory and practice.

Participating staff: Judy Bailey, Nigel Calder, Ngārewa Hāwera, Judith Mills, Sashi Sharma, Merilyn Taylor, Jenny Young-Loveridge.

Their interests include: teacher development, assessment for learning, perceptions of technology and the nature of technology, electronics and control technology, ICT, and the use of ICT in technology education, The emphasis has been on classroom-based research that leads to a clearer understanding of learning-teaching and informs pedagogical practice and curriculum development.

Participating staff: Mike Forret, Alister Jones, John Lockley, Louise Milne, Judy Moreland, John Williams.

Environmental education: This strand considers education for the environment and sustainability within both formal and non-formal education.
