Santiago Cañón Valencia – Final Recital
8 Nov 2012 8:00 PM
Star cellist Santiago Cañón Valencia presents his final performance recital at the University of Waikato at the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts.
This final recital for the BMus soloist specialisation degree will also act as a fundraising concert for Santiago who is set to head overseas for further study, with all proceeds going directly to the young cellist.
As part of his performance Santiago will play sonatas by Schnittke and Ginastera, along with possibly the greatest and most moving 20th century concerto, Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E Minor, which Santiago recently performed to a standing ovation in Melbourne with Orchestra Victoria.
This concert marks the end of a six and a half year ‘love affair’ Hamilton and the University of Waikato has had with this Colombian child protégé, who has become a YouTube sensation to equal his concert and competition successes on the international stage.
Santiago will leave behind an amazing support group that includes his inspirational cello lecturer James Tennant, a loyal audience, admiring students and a wide-eyed Conservatorium of Music staff that has never before seen the likes of his prodigious talent.
This concert provides the ideal opportunity to send Santiago off into the world with heartfelt thanks for sharing his talent and his developmental efforts with the University of Waikato. Please join us to enjoy, admire and say thank-you for the last time to this international star in the making.
Tickets: Tickets at the door $20 adults, $10 students and children, $50 family (2 adults, 2 children)
