Nothing Comes From Nothing
‘Nothing Comes from Nothing’ uncovers studio secrets
26 February 2016 - 29 April 2016
Calder & Lawson Gallery, Academy of Performing Arts, University of Waikato
Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm
Nothing Comes from Nothing contains a selection of material from a larger same-titled exhibition shown at Zeus Gallery in Tauranga 18 - 30 September 2015. Six Tauranga artists arerepresented: Natasha Cousens, Ani Fourie, Kristian Lomath, Kyle Sattler, Hannah Wilson and Grace Wright.
The exhibition aims to uncover aspects of visual art processes for the viewer and generate alternative perceptions of the artists and art forms represented. By showing studio installations, source material, documentation of processes, and finished work, viewers gain access into where and how the artworks came to be. Nothing Comes from Nothing shows the hard work, research, conceptualisation, skill development, time and devotion it takes to create work at a professional level; it represents the ‘work’ component of the word ‘artwork’.
Curator and owner of Zeus Gallery, Elliot Mason says Nothing Comes from Nothing was exceptionally well received when first exhibited in its unedited form. People were interested see the whole process and were particularly intrigued by the initial stages of the creation of a work, which they are not normally privy to. It is exciting to recreate the experience at Calder & Lawson Gallery after further refinement, a process that exemplifies the ethos of the exhibition itself.”
